Traditionally Electrum will use public electrum servers as its resource to pull bitcoin blockchain data. This is terrible for privacy because the random server can see all your transaction information. Using your own Electrum server guarantees no body can snoop on your bitcoin transactions.
In this tutorial we use the Tor browser, but you can also setup tor to run on your machine as a service.
